Fitting Guide

The ideal rug does more than look beautiful—it fits your space perfectly, enhancing and harmonizing with the surrounding interior. The right size subtly shifts a room’s dynamics, grounding furniture and defining areas to create a cohesive, elevated look.

Tips

Measure the room carefully and mark the intended rug area (masking tape works well). Check every doorway to ensure the rug won’t interfere with how doors open. If unsure about size, opt for a larger rug—it gives more flexibility and creates a grounded look.

Maintain appropriate borders: Aim for about 18–20 inches of exposed floor around the rug in most rooms to keep proportions balanced. In smaller rooms, you can reduce this, but the key is visual harmony.

Rug placement with furniture: Decide whether furniture legs go fully on or off the rug—and stay consistent. Ideally, all legs should sit on the rug to anchor the grouping.

Use scale to your advantage: Rugs can make a room feel larger. Undersized rugs fragment the space; when in doubt, choose a bigger one to unify furniture and create the illusion of more space.

Layering for style and function: If you love a smaller rug that’s too small for the area, layer it over a correctly sized neutral base (e.g., flatweave, sisal, or jute). This highlights the smaller piece while keeping the overall layout cohesive.

Living Room

In a living room, rugs help to pull a space together, add warmth and comfort, and muffle noise. Selecting a rug size for your living room depends on the size of your room as well as your furniture arrangement.

ALL LEGS OFF THE RUG

When you’ve got a smaller living room or prefer to keep all of your furniture off the rug (except for a coffee table in the center), go with a 5′ x 8′ rug.

FRONT LEGS ON, BACK LEGS OFF

This is one of our favorite size for the living room. With this size, you’ll most likely have all front legs of the funiture on the rug with the back legs off. Or just some of the front legs will be on the rug. Either way, this size connects the various place together and creates a good sense of proportion.

ALL LEGS ON THE RUG

This size generally pulls the furniture together and define a space.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, your bed size and the surrounding floor area should guide your rug choice. Anchor the bed by placing the front two legs on a large rug, ensuring the rug extends at least 24 inches beyond all sides of the bed. Keep some floor visible around the perimeter for balance—this way, when you step out of bed in the morning, your feet land on a soft, welcoming surface.

FULL SIZE BED

Laying the rug horizontally under the bed is your best option here. You certainly want to have some of rog exposed on the top too. Let your room size and personal preference dicate just how much rug you want showing at the foot of the bed.

TWIN SIZE BED

Since twin beds are small take the bed’s positioning and overall size of the room into consideration. And if you’ve got twin beds in the same room, a 9′ x 12′ works wonderfully for pulling the look together.

QUEEN SIZE BED

Just like full size beds, you’ll want to layer a rug horizontally under the beds. Both an 8′ x 10′ and 9′ x 12′ will work, but remember the larger rug has the effect of making your room appear bigger.

KING SIZE BED

A king size bed calls for at least an 8′ x 12′. Anything smaller will appear out of proportion.

Dining Room

In the dining room, choose a rug large enough so that the chair legs remain on it—even when chairs are pulled out. A good rule of thumb is to select a rug that extends at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides. Also, leave about 18 inches of exposed floor between the rug’s edge and the walls to keep the space feeling balanced and proportioned.

FOUR CHAIRS

5′ x 8′ Rugs are a great choice for smaller sized dining tables with 4 Chairs.

FOUR CHAIRS

5′ x 8′ Circular Rugs are also a great choice for smaller sized dining tables with 4 Chairs.

FOUR TO SIX CHAIRS

Regular rugs work under rounds tables too, but a round rug is a better match.

SIX TO EIGHT CHAIRS

Typically a 8′ x 12′ rug will work under a dining table with 6 to 8 chairs.

Patio

As with choosing a rug for your living room, scale is key when selecting one for your patio—consider the size and layout of your outdoor furniture first. One often overlooked advantage of indoor/outdoor rugs is how they visually unify an outdoor seating arrangement, helping create a cohesive, intentional look in open spaces.

Rug Size For Entryway And Hallway

Entryways and corridors become instantly more inviting with a vibrant, contemporary rug. For long, narrow halls, a colorful runner creates a warm and welcoming first impression. In larger rectangular or square entry spaces, opt for a bigger statement rug to greet visitors—just be sure to leave a visible border of floor (about 4–8 inches / 10–20 cm) around the edges to maintain proportion and frame the rug.
